Clinic Website Checklist for Canada: Booking, Privacy and Local SEO

A practical checklist for Canadian clinics: online booking, PIPEDA and provincial privacy basics, CASL, bilingual content and local SEO.

For most patients, your website is the first impression of your clinic. It needs to answer their questions quickly, make booking easy and handle personal information responsibly. Use this checklist to review your current site or plan a new one.

1. Make booking effortless

  • Put a clear "Book an appointment" button in the header of every page.
  • Offer online booking connected to your practice management system, not just a contact form.
  • Show services, clinicians, locations and opening hours on mobile without scrolling through long paragraphs.

2. Collect less personal health information

Under PIPEDA and provincial laws such as PHIPA in Ontario and the Health Information Act in Alberta, clinics must protect personal health information. On your website, that means:

  • Only ask for what you need to book or respond, and avoid free-text fields that invite symptoms or history.
  • Use secure, encrypted forms and hosting, and limit who can access submissions.
  • Publish a clear privacy policy explaining what you collect, why and how patients can contact you.

3. Respect CASL for marketing

Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) applies to commercial electronic messages, including email, SMS and instant messages. Use separate, unticked consent boxes for marketing, identify your clinic in every message and include an easy unsubscribe.

4. Serve patients in English and French

If you serve patients in Quebec or French-speaking communities, offer French pages and booking flows. In Quebec, Law 25 also strengthens privacy and transparency requirements, so review cookie and privacy notices.

5. Win local search

  • Create a page for each location and each core service, such as "Physiotherapy in Calgary".
  • Keep your Google Business Profile complete, with accurate hours, categories and photos.
  • Add structured data (schema) for your clinic, services and FAQs so search engines and AI assistants understand your site.
  • Make sure your advertising and testimonials follow your provincial regulatory college's standards.

6. Make it fast and accessible

A slow website loses patients. Compress images, keep pages light and test on mobile. Good contrast, readable text and keyboard-friendly forms help every patient, and support accessibility expectations such as the AODA in Ontario.
